Dazzling May

Aphrodite Ourania

April is said to be Aphrodite’s month, but here in the northeast U.S., 2 hours from the Canadian border, it’s really May. Along with the just-completed painting above, here are a few shots of the surroundings that have overwhelmed me with their beauty in the past couple of weeks.

Surprising new residents I’ve never seen in person before, two bluebirds were looking at nest sites Friday morning. Fortunately the camera was handy but I didn’t want to go to the window and scare them off. One is just left of the lamp, the other above and on the right side.

At night, the guinea hens always sleep in that same tree, then hop down at dawn. Here, a pair are just settling in, after the female (on left) apparently spent the day laying eggs. Barring any predatory tragedies, she’ll soon be staying away from this roost and sitting on the nest for a couple of weeks.
The same magnolias tree, from another window, along with a crabapple.
A poet friend sent me this image from her walk yesterday. She referred to it perfectly as Fern Goblets of Sunlight.
An awesome view of so many shapes, textures, and shades of green from a road nearby. The phone camera could not really come close to capturing it.
But the essence was absorbed.

AHA! Glad you got bluebirds at Thessaly! I knew you would!! interesting that I don’t get them here, but they’ve been in Greenfield at the scorpio house since Obama’s inauguration when they sat in the cherry tree outside the library window for a full half hour. And they’ve been around since. Your big red crane looked so nice all night, bathed in the glow of the little red-shaded marble lamp beneath her… G
